Ahh..that first breastfeed at your local cafe!

Ahhh...that first breastfeed at your local cafe!

Do you remember that first breastfed at your local cafe?

I bet it felt like you had climbed the biggest summit ever!

Did you savour the sweet bitterness of that coffee?

Did you look around you & take in your surroundings & think "gosh I missed this so much!"Did you think "WOW! I did it?"

As a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), I always encourage mama's to reflect on each milestone that they are achieving along their breastfeeding journey, because that is what the early breastfeeding journey is all about.

You need to celebrate the small wins because before you know it, they will become big wins. You will soon feel so empowered and amazed at how capable you really are!

When you cross the finish line and reach the point of breastfeeding with confidence, you will feel so empowered and amazed at how much easier life is because of being able to breastfeed your baby.

What did it take to get to the point of feeling confident enough to reach that first breastfeed at your local cafe? Who supported you to get to this point?

Remember how overwhelming life with your baby was, look how far you have become! Be sure to not forget that you haven't been able to do it on your own.

You know that mama who is in hospital with her newborn right now? She was you not too long ago, Mama!

You know that mama who kept feeling like a failure, but picked herself right back up and kept at it?

The mama who finally got to enjoy breastfeeding her baby for the first time at her local cafe?

You know that mama who needed hands on assistance to actually get the baby to latch!

The mama who had no idea how to hold a baby let alone keep them alive!

The mama who thought she wasn't capable of doing it!

The mama who reached out to ensure she saw the lactation consultant (IBCLC) who taught her how to latch, learn about her baby's cues and how to comfort her baby.

You know that mama who needed help to get to the point of feeling independent enough that she could get that cup of coffee?

She's you, Mama!

To the mama who is thinking she can't do it, know that it takes a lot of strength to fight those insecurities but most of all, it takes support to be able to breastfeed as you imagined it would be.

You will get there, but you won't be able to do it alone....make sure you get the support that you and your baby both need.

As much as birth wasn't what you expected it to be, breastfeeding does not usually begin as naturally as you imagined it would.

It is normal that you are going to need support and guidance to get there.

For mama's who are breastfeeding, I would love for you to share your own stories about the support that you have needed to get to the point where you are now. You can gift other mothers the privilege of breastfeeding hope and encouragement.
